April 6th, 2008

I was excited to hear that So Delicious (parent company Turtle Mountain) was introducing soy yogurt, because their soy ice cream is fantastic. I bought my first 6-oz container last night. Review follows:

Recipe: Rich Chocolate Brownies with secret ingredient

April 6th, 2008

This super-rich yet low-fat brownie recipe is one I’ve been working on since I read about the idea in 101cookbooks.com. (the original recipe uses 4 eggs) It uses black beans kind of like you’d use tofu. I’ve modified the recipe liberally to make it vegan.

Here is the black bean brownie recipe so far. It’s really good. This photo, from an earlier batch before I perfected it, does not do the brownie texture justice:

Misleading Dairy Council Weight-Loss Ads Removed

April 5th, 2008

The USDA and the Dairy Industry have been forced to halt misleading weight-loss ads after theĀ  Physicians Group for Responsible Medicine lobbied the Federal Trade Commission. Vegan Truffles

April 5th, 2008

Our ganache frosting makes super-easy vegan truffles and fudge. To make your own hand-made truffles with our frosting mix, simply prepare according to package directions (add boiling water, stir and allow to cool). Then, scoop out rounded teaspoon-sized balls, roll and place on wax paper dusted with cocoa powder. Sprinkle with more cocoa powder and roll around to fully coat. Get creative, and add flavored liqueurs along with the boiling water, or a few drops of flavor extract, like peppermint, almond, or orange extract. See “our mix recipes” on our website for more hand-made truffle ideas. We can’t think of a more thoughtful gift.

Food or Medicine?

April 5th, 2008

My aunt recently told me about an acquaintance who had been placed on a restricted diet. So she thought Goodbaker mixes might be good for him. Now, I adore my Aunt, but this annoyed me profoundly, because it represents a common but erroneous way of thinking about food choices. I believe it is not necessary to wait until a doctor tells you to stop eating “normal” food before you consider healthier options. Read the rest of this entry »

How to make homemade soy yogurt with less sugar

April 5th, 2008

I’m frustrated with the overly-sweetened soy yogurts I find in my local grocery stores. The extreme amounts of sugar in them cancel out any health benefits, in my humble opinion. So after seeing Martha Stewart make homemade dairy yogurt on TV, I decided to make homemade soy yogurt. It’s surprisingly satisfying.

Vegan Crepe Recipe

A friend, who eats eggs, gave me a crepe pan recently. I couldn’t find a good vegan crepe recipe, so I invented my own. It’s surprisingly simple: Read the rest of this entry »

Neal Barnard of PCRM interview

April 5th, 2008

There’s a good, but much too brief, interview with Neal Barnard, the Founder of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine here:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28550-2004Dec2.html

PCRM is a tremendous force for good. He is the child of cattle ranchers, now a vegetarian
